A crown is a custom cap that restores a damaged tooth to full shape and strength. Dr. Brittany Pierpont recommends one when a filling cannot do the job alone.
We see Highpoint patients who have put off a worn-out tooth for months. There is no scolding here, only a plan.
When a crown makes sense

Large cavities, cracks, worn enamel and teeth weakened by past work are the usual reasons. An exam and X-rays show how much sound tooth is left.
If a smaller repair works, we will tell you.

Root canal first, crown later

A tooth with an infected nerve needs treatment before it is capped. Dr. Pierpont does root canal therapy and plans the crown to follow.
That sequence gives the tooth its best chance of lasting.

A lighter repair

An onlay fills part of the chewing surface and keeps more of your own tooth than a full crown would.
It is a good fit when the damage is moderate.
